Gaja, run by the Gaja family in Barbaresco since 1859, is widely regarded as Piedmont's most influential wine producer, with Angelo Gaja credited for elevating Nebbiolo to world-class status and pioneering single-vineyard bottling in the region. Rossj-Bass, first made in 1988, is named for Angelo Gaja's daughter Rossana and the low-lying vineyard plot where the grapes are grown.
